Description:

Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Songye culture, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A stylized anthropomorphic female figure, hand-carved from hard wood, depicted standing with thick, attenuated legs atop an integral circular plinth. The rotund figure boasts a distended abdomen, drooping breasts, angular shoulders with thick arms, and a squat neck. The figure leans against a flat backing with a carved semicircular groove on the verso. The ovoid head displays incised almond-shaped eyes, a slender nose, pursed lips, and semicircular ears, all beneath a domed brow and a projecting wooden horn. Covered in lustrous dark-brown patina, this is a wonderful example of Songye artistry! Size: 3.625" W x 8.5" H (9.2 cm x 21.6 cm).
