Description:

Oceania, Melanesia, Solomon Islands, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden canoe paddle of a tall form. The petaloid blade bears a slightly uneven profile with one lateral edge more rounded than the other as well as a pointed tip that cuts through the water with ease. The sturdy handle emanates from one side of the blade face and has a flattened butt end which is easy to grasp. Red-brown patina has formed across both the blade and handle. Size: 4.5" W x 68.875" H (11.4 cm x 174.9 cm); 69.7" H (177 cm) on included custom stand.
