Description:

Oceania, Melanesia, Solomon Islands, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A beautiful hand-carved paddle made from palmwood. The lengthy paddle is 2 pieces - the paddle head and shaft are one, and the upturned handle grip is a separate piece attached to the top by a thick iron rivet. The blade exhibits a slender lanceolate profile, and the crescent shape of the handle was a popular style in the Solomon Islands that was easy to grip and the ideal style for paddling canoes for war, fishing, or travel. Canoes were invaluable for the people of this region, and the more ornate paddles even came to symbolize ritualistic items for ceremony and trade. Size: 5" W x 56" H (12.7 cm x 142.2 cm); 56.5" H (143.5 cm) on included custom stand.
