Western United States, California, San Diego Mission, ca. 1910s CE. A gorgeous basketry bowl of shallow form that is hand-built from native plant fibers and decorated with dark pigment to create a pair of confrontational diamondback rattlesnakes. Each serpentine creature wraps their thick body around one side of the basket rim, their rattling tails almost touching the body of the other snake, while the spade-shaped head extends its forked tongue at the opposing snake. Size: 13.25" Diameter x 1" H (33.7 cm x 2.5 cm)
