Oceania, Polynesia, probably Tonga or Tahiti, ca. early 20th century CE. A beautiful boat oar carved from caramel-hued hardwood with a stocky handle, a lightly-curved paddle, and a short spike protruding from the tip. The spike is utilized when pushing boats out of shallow sand bars. Tongan peoples also use oars like these in ceremonial dances which derived from rituals where the oars were employed as clubs. Size: 54.25" L x 7.5" W (137.8 cm x 19 cm).
