Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden fence corner post used to delineate the property lines around one's home. The post displays a pair of abstract anthropomorphic faces, each with puffy cheeks, bulging eyes, and bulbous noses. The bottom features an abstract crocodile head with a lengthy mouth, globular eyes, and incised lateral lines on either side of the mouth representing jagged teeth. The entire piece is decorated with painted linear and circular motifs in orange, pink, and white hues atop the dark-brown wood. Custom wooden display stand included. Size: 21.75" H (55.2 cm); 23" H (58.4 cm) on included custom stand.
