Description:

Papua New Guinea, East Sepik River Region, Highlands, or Asmat area of Papua (Irian Jaya), Abelam culture, ca. 1930s to 1940s CE. Two classic bone daggers created by the Abelam people, finely carved Cassowary (ostrich-like bird) bones, with clan etchings throughout, the upper termini with eye-like motifs so as to represent an avian or animorphic head. The etched intricate geometric motifs are quite beautiful and have traditionally been made to imbue these implements with power thereby protecting their owners. Impressive for their meticulously incised complex clan etchings, the remaining red pigment, symbolic meaning, and excellent condition. Custom stand. Size: larger dagger measures 14.25" H (36.2 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Private New Mexico collection, ex-Sotheby's Australia.
