Description:

Papua New Guinea, Aibom Village, ca. early 20th century CE. This is a form of Chambri pottery, traditionally made in Aibom Village, where there is suitable clay for making vessels of this kind and where pottery like this is an important component of the local economy. It is a hollow effigy figure with the traditional Aibom Village style of spiky decoration around the body and a large opening on the chest. The head is conical, with pronounced eyes, nose, and mouth; below it is a thin neck and then the bulbous body. During the wet season, women source and scoop out the clay from pits at the foot of Aibom Mountain, then form it into the shape of the pot; men traditionally shape the face. The pieces are dried, painted, and fired at a low temperature. Size: 3.5" W x 9" H (8.9 cm x 22.9 cm).
