Description:

Middle East, Persia (Iran), ca. early 20th century CE. A decorative iron helmet with a fanciful, incised series of motifs around the half-sphere dome. This series depicts people, animals, flowers, trees, abstract geometric patterns, and, around the lower rim, calligraphic-like symbols. Below that is a narrow line pierced through repeatedly with tiny holes to attach chain mail, which hangs down in long, triangular drapes around the sides of the head and neck. Two leaf-shaped sockets are attached to the front of the head, once used to hold feathers or a similar flourish. A curved hook rises from between the sockets, and a tall, spear-like spike juts outward from the top of the helmet. Size: 8.1" W x 8.6" H (20.6 cm x 21.8 cm); 20.4" H (without chainmail) (51.8 cm) on included custom stand.
