Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, ca. early 20th century CE. A symmetrically-carved light wood splash board with fantastical motifs. On the upper part is a highly abstract face composed of swirls, with two big eyes on either side; on the lower part is a series of linear, geometric snakes wrapped around themselves above a floral motif. These particular items were used on outrigger canoes as protective splash boards. They are also sometimes called gope. Although splash boards are used throughout the South Pacific, the shape of this one suggests it is from Calvados Island, in East Sepik. Size: 21.5" W x 28.4" H (54.6 cm x 72.1 cm)
