Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A circular wooden mask displaying several incised concentric rings, alternating in color between black, red, and white, with spotted designs adorning each non-white facial area. The face has a tall bar-shaped nose, a pair of carved eye holes below plateaued brows, a rectangular mouth filled with fangs, and a banded chin. Two indented areas on the cheeks - perhaps ritual scarification marks - are colored in white, and the carved-out verso is painted a dark-brown color. A small metal suspension wire is threaded through the top. Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 7.875" W x 8.5" H (20 cm x 21.6 cm); 10" H (25.4 cm) on included custom stand.
