Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A fascinating, hand-carved wood figure of a supernatural being, depicted with a massive, yam-like head that towers above the figure's short body. The figure stands with hands on hips, legs bowed outward, and prominent phallus hanging down between them. The face, like the rest of the body, is highly abstract, with incised, swirling decorations carved onto one side (the other side is left undecorated). These decorative motifs are meant to recall tattoos worn by living members of the society. Size: 5.9" W x 30.45" H (15 cm x 77.3 cm)
