Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Sepik River region, ca. early 20th century CE. A wonderful avian-form ceremonial staff, carved from wood, with relief motifs of zoomorphs and floral decorations exposing the lighter interior of the wood under the bark. The top of the staff is carved into a bird's head, with the beak tilting upward; a ring of what looks like cassowary feathers is around the neck above a short woven rattan collar. Size: 2.75" W x 35.35" H (7 cm x 89.8 cm); 36" H (91.4 cm) on included custom stand.
