Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A massive bow formed from a single slender branch or root with tapered tips, a thin midsection for use as a handle, and a bow string formed from tightly twisted bark strands. The topmost point features a shaved fin-shaped finial with six incised striations. Bows like this example were made in this size to facilitate either an extremely long arrow flight - if hunting birds in flight, for example - or hitting their close-range target with enough force to bring it down in one shot. Size: 0.8" W x 70.75" H (2 cm x 179.7 cm); 73" H (185.4 cm) on included custom stand.
