Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, early to mid 20th century CE. A sizable wooden bow, likely made for hunting or warfare. The bow is constructed from a long palm tree shaft with a taut fibrous stalk of bamboo as the drawstring. The drawstring is knotted and wrapped around the end of each limb with additional fibrous pieces to hold the bamboo stalk in place. Long bows were made to facilitate either an extremely long arrow flight - if hunting birds in flight, for example - or hitting their close-range target with enough force to bring it down in one shot. Size: 54.5" L x 1" W (138.4 cm x 2.5 cm)
