Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Sepik River valley, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden figural sail mount, made for one of the ubiquitous canoes that have been used traditionally to travel around this region. Each of the three arms has an anthropomorphic head at its terminal. The longest arm has a more elaborate head, capped by a conical, phallus-shaped headdress and giving a full, albeit relatively short, body. Size: 14.5" W x 26" H (36.8 cm x 66 cm); 28.5" H (72.4 cm) on included custom stand.
