Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Sepik River Region, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A sizable shield of an ovoid form, composed of a wooden lattice frame covered on the front with several bark panels painted in hues of white, red, and black. The front of the shield displays a fantastical, black-painted creature with clawed feet, a bulbous body, a curved tail with a row of scales, and a spider-form finial on top of the abstract head. Size: 32" W x 45.5" H (81.3 cm x 115.6 cm).

Provenance: private Tucson, Arizona, USA collection, acquired between 1950 and 1985

  • Condition: Losses to one curved frame bar and areas of lattice frame on verso and small areas of bark panels on front as shown. Small nicks and abrasions to bark panels, original pigmentation, and frame on verso, with light fading to original pigmentation. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
