Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Sepik River region, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A wonderful, hand-carved wood canoe prow of triangular form with anthropomorphic and zoomorphic decorations. The intriguing example features the head of a bird at its center, facing downwards with ovoid eyes and an elongated beak, while a human-like visage is displayed at the tip of the prow and a lizard-like animal stretches between the bird and anthropomorphic face. Swirling abstract imagery decorates the sides of the prow. A fine example from Papua New Guinea! Size: 9.5" W x 23.875" H (24.1 cm x 60.6 cm)
