Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Middle Sepik River region, Washkuk Hills, Kwoma people, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. An interesting earthenware vessel with a quartet of small, abstract faces with aquiline noses, ovoid eyes, and smiling mouths, each with its nose curved into a loop so that the vessel could be suspended. Deeply incised lines, filled in with red and white pigment, surround these faces and cover the exterior body of the vessel. This was made to celebrate the three phases of the yam ceremony. Size: 9" W x 8.15" H (22.9 cm x 20.7 cm)

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
