Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, possibly Yuat River region, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A fascinating, woven fiber dance mask, quite large and made to cover the entire upper body of its wearer, with an overall conical form and painted with a striated pattern in red, chocolate brown, and cream hues, attached long slender arms comprised of fiber wrapped reeds, a dramatic face featuring applied large eyes and a ridge running vertically between them made from plaited fibers, with a large tusk-shaped wooden ornament through the septum of the nose, and a 'hairy' beard of suspended fibers. Wooden projections protrude symmetrically from the sides of the face, and a long red fibrous skirt trims the lower body. Size: 20" W x 43" H (50.8 cm x 109.2 cm); 65" H (165.1 cm) on included custom stand (stand allows length of skirt to be included in height).
