Description:

Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, Alaska, Native Alaskan, ca. 1940s CE. An intriguing spirit mask, hand-carved from porous whale bone, depicting a squinting face with an entirely separate face as its left eye. Each mask is ovoid in form with a bar-shaped nose, a tight circular mouth, curved eyes and brows, and incised creasing across the foreheads. The verso is relatively flat with only a small suspension string adhered to a pair of drilled holes. The secondary mask is likely carved from walrus ivory given its stark yellow-white hue. The back of the mask also bears an inscription "CO," which may indicate the hand of an artist known as Correll. Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 4.5" W x 5.5" H (11.4 cm x 14 cm); 7" H (17.8 cm) on included custom stand.
