Description:

Native American, northern Pacific Northwest coast, probably Haida from Queen Charlotte Island, British Columbia, ca. early 20th century CE. A beautiful bentwood box, carved from cedar, with twenty inlaid abalone buttons. The interior is painted bright red, while the exterior has red and black figures in outline forming the face and eyes of different sacred animals. Traditionally, bentwood boxes were used for storing and serving water and foodstuffs. Hot stones could be added to cook the contents. They are used throughout the Pacific Northwest, but the painted rather than carved examples are often made by the Haida people. Size: 16" L x 11" W x 9" H (40.6 cm x 27.9 cm x 22.9 cm)
