Description:

Native American, Pacific Northwest, ca. early 20th century CE. A fascinating object, a knife carved from a smooth grey-brown stone, with deep red pipestone carved eyes and mask. The top of the knife is Janus-headed, one side bearing a human face with large, round, red eyes; the other side has a face covered with an owl mask complete with long, curved beak. The heads sit above a broad handle which flows smoothly into a thin ovoid guard and a long, thin knife blade made of the same stone. The eyes and mask are held in place with leather straps. A delightful example of Pacific Northwest style! Size: 2.7" W x 9.2" H (6.9 cm x 23.4 cm); 9.7" H (24.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Newport Beach, California, USA collection; ex private Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA collection
