Description:

Western Asia, probably manufactured in Istanbul, then part of the Ottoman Empire, ca. early 20th century CE. A beautiful leather-bound miniature Quran (Koran), its covers decorated with a gilt foliate-scroll; it may once have had a metal case, as many like it did. Many similar tiny Qurans - including ones even smaller than this - were carried by Muslim troops fighting in World War I; they believed that carrying the volume could protect them from harm. Size: 3.15" W x 3.8" H (8 cm x 9.7 cm)
