Description:

North America, Pacific Northwest, Nuu-Chah-Nulth peoples, ca. 1910 CE. A beautiful wooden mask, hand carved from a dark wood and finely painted with a tattoo-like design in green, red, and black hues, with an excellent patina. The Nuu-chah-nulth are indigenous peoples of the West Coast of Vancouver Island. Their name translates to "all along the mountains" referring to their lands that stretch from the coastal mountains which are rich in cedar trees to the Pacific waters which are bountiful with salmon. Nuu-Chah-Nuilth masks like this example generally display angular patterns, and their colors and compositions reflect the owner's status, family, and community history. An impressive example! Size: 7.8" W x 8.8" H (19.8 cm x 22.4 cm)
