West Africa, Nigeria, Ogoni peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A charming example of a traditional cane wood Ogoni dance mask, with narrow eyes, an exaggerated nose, and an articulated jaw. A huge crest of hair rises from the top of the head. Masks like this are used as part of ritual performances at funerals and when yams (the main crop in traditional Ogoni society) were planted and harvested. Size: 4.75" W x 8.25" H (12.1 cm x 21 cm)
