Description:

West Africa, Nigeria, Ibibio peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A startling mask, hand-carved from wood to be worn during the masquerade of the Ekpo society, whose ceremonies have produced some of the greatest works of art in Ibibio society. The mask has long, thin slits for viewing underneath a bulging forehead painted to look like eyes outlined by thick black. These are above a small, thin nose and a very small, pouting mouth. A huge, curved crest rises above the masks's face. Size: 4.6" W x 10.45" H (11.7 cm x 26.5 cm)

Provenance: ex Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA, acquired prior to 1970
