Southeast Asia, Indonesia, North Sumatra Province, Nias Islands, ca. early 20th century CE. A fine gathering of three hand-carved wooden male ancestral figures known as "Adu Zatua." Each figure stands nude with a rigid posture and bears a rectangular opening through their abdomens; these figures were mounted on a pole and place over the hearth of a private residence. The nude figures wear segmented necklaces and have no arms beneath angular heads set with almond-shaped eyes with elaborate mustachios. Two of the figures don identical spade-shaped headdresses, and the tallest figure displays a grand tapering headdress. Size of largest (tall headdress): 2.4" W x 13.3" H (6.1 cm x 33.8 cm).

  • Condition: Each figure has abrasions to bodies and heads, char marks on the back of the legs consistent with being placed above a hearth, and softening to some facial details, otherwise intact and very good. Great patina throughout.
