Lot 177C
Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ngbaka peoples, early 20th century CE. This is a standing, carved wooden female figure with a concave bi-planar face with a broad triangular nose and narrow almond-shaped eyes. She has long, straight arms that hang to her sides. The top of the head has some cross cut striations. These are rare objects, thought to represent Seto and Nabo, sister and brother messengers of the supreme deity Gale (Gbonboso), recognized as the ancestors of the Ngbaka. Carved images of them are placed on a family altar, where they can be paid respect daily, and where they can protect the family from illness and hardship. This is one of those figures, as signified by the heavy ridge of scars flowing down from the top of the head and bisecting the forehead. Size: 3.1" W x 9.75" H (7.9 cm x 24.8 cm)
Provenance: Ex-New York/Florida Collection; Ex-Zemanek Munster, Germany.
