Central Asia, Nepal, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden anthropomorphic figure depicted in a squatting position atop an integral circular base. The figure has its legs drawn up to its hips and has a tubular abdomen with arms drawn to its chest in a praying position. The head is flanked by planar shoulders and bears recessed eyes, a bar-shaped nose, an open mouth above a rounded chin, and ovoid ears. Guardian figures like this are typically found in or around dwellings in Nepal to ward against disease, evil spirits, or other malevolent forces. Size: 6.5" W x 17.125" H (16.5 cm x 43.5 cm); 18.375" H (46.7 cm) on included custom stand.
