Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, Navajo (Dine), ca. early to mid-20th century CE. This lot features a handwoven rug and wool wall pocket, both crafted from sheep's wool. The rug likely dates from the 1900s to 1930s and is made using a traditional Navajo weaving method known as "section lines" (or "lazy lines"). Instead of weaving in a continuous back-and-forth motion, the weaver worked in sections, joining them together. This method results in the diagonal joins characteristic of the piece. The natural dyes create a neutral, timeless palette. The second textile may have originally been a sampler, repurposed as a decorative wall pocket. Size of rug: 65" L x 38" W (165.1 cm x 96.5 cm); pocket sampler: 20.5" L x 15.5" W (52.1 cm x 39.4 cm)
