Description:

Central Asia, northeastern India/Burma, Naga people, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A dramatic conical headdress, made of woven rattan, its surface finely covered with red and black horse's hair, decorated with multiple curved boar's teeth, and with long extensions of dyed horse's hair flowing from the sides. A trio of cowrie shells sits at the center of the woven headband. The Naga people are a combination of tribes in northeastern India and northwestern Burma; during the time that this headdress was made, they still led a very traditional lifestyle and engaged in headhunting. Size (not including horns or hair): 8" W x 10.2" H (20.3 cm x 25.9 cm); 18.45" H (46.9 cm) on included custom stand.
