Description:

Latin America, Mexico, ca. early 20th century CE. A stylized hand-carved wooden festival mask with a grotesque visage. The skin is a ghastly pale yellow-white with russet red cheeks, red rimmed eyes, large lashes, and arched brows. Eye slits for the wearer to see through are cut into the sockets, and suspension holes are drilled in the forehead and peripheries. The exaggerated angular shapes: upturned nose, high cheek bones, and sunken eyes create a gaunt and haunting expression that emulates an emaciated and nearly skeletal person. Size: 7.5" L x 6.5" W (19 cm x 16.5 cm)

Provenance: ex-Sally Snell collection, bequeathed by her uncle Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010
