Description:

Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lulua (also Luluwa) peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved male power figure that stands on two thick legs with prominent genitalia. Two fiber bundles are tied with rattan strips to piercings on the upper part of his arms, and sticks protrude from the top of the pouches. His head features a large nose, small lips, and huge almond-shaped eyes below deep brows. The head is surmounted by a multi-tiered headdress. The stylized visage looks entranced, and his impressive headdress and stick pouches may indicate shamanic status. Size: 6" W x 15.5" H (15.2 cm x 39.4 cm)
