Description:

Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Luba or Hemba (Bahemba) peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden fetish figure with a classic Luba/Hemba (the two groups live near each other and produce similar-looking figures) Janiform face: a curved, large forehead, and a sharply pointed, triangular chin, one on either side of the figure. A tall, rounded headdress projects from the top of the figure's head, made of stuffed leather, while the body of the figure is wrapped in rope and some kind of animal skin with the remains of blonde fur on it. Woven, braided rope hangs down from the sides, as does an iron hook. Size: 2.35" W x 10.35" H (6 cm x 26.3 cm); 15.45" H (39.2 cm) on included custom stand.
