Description:

East Asia, Korea, early 20th century. Hand painted on buff paper, a dramatic depiction of a tiger with a thick coat of tawny orange fur, perhaps inspired by a famous painting of a "Ferocious Tiger" created during the Joseon dynasty that is now in the National Museum of Korea. Traditionally, tigers have been featured in Korean art to fend off evil spirits. Attractive fabric trims of green and copper floral patterns serve as upper and lower borders, and the painting is set on a hanging scroll. Size of painting: 46.5" L x 22.5" W (118.1 cm x 57.2 cm) Size of scroll mount: 62.125" L x 16.375" W (157.8 cm x 41.6 cm)
