Description:

East Asia, Japan, Meiji to Showa Period, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A dramatic theatre mask, expertly hand-carved from tan wood to display the visage of a jealous female demon known as Hannya. Crowned by a lengthy pair of horns, the fascinating vizard presents a tall forehead with a prominent vertical crest, huge eyes with drilled pupils, defined cheekbones, a bulbous nose, a strong jaw, and a large mouth held open in a fearsome growl displaying 2 rows of teeth and sharp fangs. This expressive countenance is flanked by a pair of pointed ears and capped by a centrally parted coiffure. Hannya masks are worn in the plays "Aoi no ue" and "Dojoji." Size: 6.8" W x 10.5" H (17.3 cm x 26.7 cm)

The form of this mask is known as "Hannya," a vengeful female spirit who has become corrupted due to intense jealousy or obsession. Masks like this example are used in the Noh theatre tradition as well as Shinto ritual kagura dances. A marvelous example of history and thespianism!
