East Asia, Japan, Meiji era, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. This large wooden mingei (folk art) carving depicts Daikokuten (Daikoku), one of the Seven Lucky Gods, standing joyfully atop two rice bales, holding a mallet in one hand and carrying a sack of treasure over his shoulder. Daikokuten is the deity of fortune and wealth, with his magical mallet symbolizing the granting of wishes, luck, and prosperity.
