Description:

East Asia, Japan, late Meiji era, ca. 1900 to 1912 CE. A hand-carved wooden box of a rectangular form with a form-fitting lid that hinges on the verso. The box is covered in crimson-hued lacquer that is further adorned with yellow figures, clouds, and mountains across the exterior surfaces, and the front features a brass latch and lock plate for securing the vessel shut. The interior surfaces are lined with thin, beige-hued leather panels that provide a cushioned surface for the interior contents. Size: 6.5" L x 20.125" W x 6.625" H (16.5 cm x 51.1 cm x 16.8 cm)

  • Condition: Chips and abrasions to exterior surfaces, with minor darkening to areas of lacquer pigment, and minor lacquer transfer to interior leather lining, otherwise intact and very good. Nice patina to brass components and great craquelure to lacquered surfaces.
