Description:

East Asia, northern Japan, Ainu peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A personal knife used for myriad utilitarian tasks by the native Japanese Ainu peoples known as a makiri. The single-edged, carbon-steel blade bears a thin spine that tapers to a pointed tip. The wooden handle features three bars of linear and crosshatched patterns, and the intricate sheath exhibits an elaborate curvilinear motif set against a densely incised ground.
