Description:

Native American, Arctic region, Inuit peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A tall harpoon, fashioned from wood, iron, twine, and bone, and made in multiple parts joined tightly together. The lower part of the handle is wrapped in thick leather straps, while the center of the handle is wrapped thickly in twine. Above this is another wooden section covered in thick hide. The iron tip is attached to this via a long iron tang that screws into the wood, with some of the screw mechanism still visible. This tang is wrapped in leather straps with two hafted ovoid bones that look like they are from a marine mammal, probably a seal. The sharp, curved tip rises above this. A fascinating and aesthetically beautiful artifact! Size: 1.45" W x 61.75" H (3.7 cm x 156.8 cm); 62.5" H (158.8 cm) on included custom stand.
