Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A beautiful example of a kris (keris), a type of personal ceremonial sword. The hand-carved wooden handle features a tilted, knob-form pommel and a slender body, and beneath is a hemispherical brass spacer cap inset with red and white stones. The forged carbon-steel blade has a straight profile, a projecting shoulder guard, and protruding hemispherical bulbs on each side formed with lighter strands. The carved wooden sheath features a broad guard protector adorned with a Naga serpent in the center and two additional Nagas on the peripheries, an elegant bird beneath an archway, a pair of foliate-adorned diamond shapes, and a similarly-adorned triangle, all above a feathered lower tip. A beautiful example covered in fine patina! Size (w/ sheath): 6.4" W x 22.9" H (16.3 cm x 58.2 cm); length of blade: 13.6" L (34.5 cm).
