Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. early 20th century CE. A beautiful personal ceremonial sword known as a kris (also keris). The hand-carved wooden handle features a pair of abstract anthropomorphic maskettes along the interior curve, and the electrum spacer disc is inlaid with 8 gorgeous opal cabochons. The forged-steel blade features a nice serpentine profile with sharpened edges, a pointed tip, and a wide hand guard. The slender blade housing is covered with a tan and brown velvet bag case. A maker's mark - reading either "JR" or "JPC" is stamped on one side of the guard protector. Size (w/ sheath): 5.5" W x 18.625" H (14 cm x 47.3 cm); (blade): 14.75" L x 3.4" W (37.5 cm x 8.6 cm); electrum quality: 44.9% gold, 40.8% silver, 10% copper.

  • Condition: Hand guard of blade has been adhered within guard protector and cannot be removed. Blade housing is removable from bottom of guard protector to reveal blade. Minor abrasions and nicks to blade, with a few fissures and chips to wooden blade housing. Velvet casing placed around blade housing for protection. Great patina throughout, and beautiful opal coloration. Signed on one side of guard protector.
