Description:

Indonesia, Java, early 20th century CE. A hand carved and hand painted dramatic wood mask depicting Klana, a character of the Babakan Topeng in which he is used in a series of solo Javanese dances. This type is also used in Gambuh where he portrays Panji's worst enemy. Clearly an angry and violent countenance, Klana would be the Javanese version of the Balinese Ravana from Wayang Wong. A fabulous example painted with a gold complexion, donning a golden crown with red and green carved decoration above an expressive visage comprised of bulging eyes, a dramatically upturned nose, and parted lips bearing golden teeth. Eyes, nostrils, and mouth have openwork for the wearer. Amazing patina on the interior. Size: 6.75" L x 5.75" W (17.1 cm x 14.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois USA, acquired prior to 1970.
