Asian, Indonesia, Central Kalimantan, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved and beautifully painted Hudo mask presenting a dramatic visage comprised of large round eyes, an immense pointed beak, an open mouth revealing many teeth with fangs at the outer corners, and side pieces that resemble bird heads in profile, all skillfully delineated - both hand carved and hand painted in a red and black color scheme. Hudo masks have traditionally been used in agricultural rituals to ward off any evil spirits and bring about a healthy harvest. Size: 14.125" W x 15.875" H (35.9 cm x 40.3 cm); 18" H (45.7 cm) on included custom stand.
