Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Borneo, eastern Kalimantan, Kayanic Dayak complex, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A fine wood mask, hand-carved to display a protruding forehead above thick eyebrows, openwork eyes, a straight nose, and full, slightly parted lips. High-set ears flank the rectangular head, which is enveloped in a rich espresso-hued pigment. A woven strand of rattan is strapped to the verso via drill holes along the peripheries. This mask perhaps represents an ancestral figure to whom the mask is meant to show respect and remembrance. Size: 6.3" W x 8.9" H (16 cm x 22.6 cm)
