Description:

West Africa, Nigeria, Igbo peoples, early to mid 20th century CE. A tall headdress, hand-carved from wood, with its round form carved to have what look like long, three-dimensional flaps hanging over its surface. A huge, rounded crest rises from the center, attended on either side by two figures that combine anthropomorphic faces with tall, projecting, antelope-like horns. This type of mask is worn by members of the Ekpe, a secret society that flourishes in this region of Africa. Size: 17" H (43.2 cm)
