Native American, Southwestern USA, Arizona or New Mexico, Hopi Peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand coiled pottery jar featuring a black-painted decoration on a pale beige-cream ground. The base has the remains of a signature - although worn the last discernable letters are "PEYO" possibly as part of the name Nampeyo of Hano or one of her relatives. Nampeyo (Hopi-Tewa, 1856 to 1942) was a female artist who revived Pueblo pottery as an art form in the 20th century, and many subsequent family members have also become respected potters - at least four generations of Nampeyos! Size: 4" Diameter x 2.25" H (10.2 cm x 5.7 cm)
