Polynesia, Hawaiian Islands, ca. early 20th century CE. A fascinating necklace incorporating a whale bone palaoa, a curved, hook-like neck ornament traditionally worn by both male and female ali'i (chiefs). Around it are six hand-carved marine tooth animals - a dragon, a pig, a monkey, a tiger, a rabbit, and a snake - and sixteen spherical marine tooth beads of diminishing size. Eighteen large spherical turquoise beads are placed between the beads. A silver-plated clasp holds the necklace together. Size of palaoa: 1.75" H (4.4 cm); length of necklace: 19" L (48.3 cm)
