Description:

South Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, ca. early 20th century CE. A stunning large bowl, hand-carved from wood of the monkeypod tree, also called the raintree. This vessel was carved using stone and coral tools to resemble the calabash gourd, an important fruit for the Hawaiians. The bowl sits on a flat base, swells outward and rises up forming steep walls, a thin lip, and a deep interior cavity. The exterior walls have been polished to a shining and smooth finish with a lovely coffee and caramel colored graining across the surface. Royalty valued calabash bowls - even going so far as to name some after royal individuals - and until the early 19th century they were reserved for elites in society. Size: 7.5" W x 9.75" H (19 cm x 24.8 cm)
